Servicing Contaminated Gas Detection Devices Matters

Gas detection devices save lives in the most demanding environments. By using them in contaminated areas, the devices themselves become contaminated too, with chemicals, polluted water, dust, asbestos, and anything else carried through air or water.

When working with gas detection devices in contaminated environments, make sure they’re correctly calibrated, and that all filters are in place. Preventing contamination from entering the instrument in the first place saves wear, time, and cost when it comes to cleaning. If you’re working with gas detection devices in environments with high concentrations present, make sure you have the right sensor for the job.

What happens when a contaminated device arrives at our technical department?

We ask customers to let us know when sending in a gas detection device for service, regardless of whether the instrument is contaminated. We have procedures in place to handle this safely and efficiently, and when the device is dropped off, we ask about contamination again.

If there’s any doubt, our first step is to measure the ambient air around the instrument using a high-resolution PID device, such as a ppbRAE, WatchGas NEO, or UltraRAE. When an instrument is confirmed contaminated, we work in a dedicated area with an extraction hood to protect our safety. We’ve also developed best practices to prevent asbestos contamination risk for our staff.

Every device is thoroughly cleaned, inside and out. Contaminated parts that can’t be cleaned are replaced. Functionality is then checked, and the gas detection device is calibrated. A device that’s essentially as good as new leaves our service department, with traceable certificates included.

These practices and tools mean we can service contaminated instruments without difficulty, and with practically no time lost. That’s why we’re able to promise our best-in-class service turnaround times, even on contaminated equipment.
